BROCKTON--Blue Hills Ski Area, Blue Hills Brewery and Friends of Blue Hills will host the 2012 Blue Hills Winter Fest Tuesday, February 28, from 5 to 8 p.m.at Blue Hills Ski area.
There will be Irish music, hot chili, and Blue Hills Brewery’s best beer.
Participants can also check out the slopes and ski or snowboard under the lights.
For those who prefer not to ski, but want to hit Blue Hills' trails, noted naturalist Matt ‘Twig’ Largess will lead a nighttime tour of the trails.
The event is free and open to all.

African Festival At Brockton's Arnone Saturday

BROCKTON--The Arnone Elementary School will host the 14th annual African Arts Festivaland Marketplace Saturday, Feb 25 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
There will be soul food, afro-carribean cuisine, live performances, storytelling, singing, and African drumming and dancing.
There will also be several films and a lecture focusing on blacks in films. Parts of the films may be graphic in nature and are geared toward teenagers and adults.
Cost is $5 for adults and $3 for under 12 and seniors.
The event is initiated by Indaba Theatre of New England, a Brockton based non-profit group whose mission is to inspire and uplift inner city youth.
All are welcome to attend.

Actress Cooper To Highlight Women Of Year Breakfast, Nominations Accepted Until Feb. 22

BROCKTON--The Brockton Commission on Women’s Issues is accepting nominations for the 2012 Women of the Year Awards until Feb. 22.
Thewoman being nominated must be age 16 or older, a Brockton resident, andsomeone who has made a significant contribution outside of her job to the Brockton community within the last year.
Award recipients will be judged on their contributions made to residents of Brockton or to the city in general.
The commission is asking area residents and workers to nominate women who are unrecognized heroes of the city - the women who make a difference in the lives of the people of Brockton at work and outside of the office.
Nomination forms are available on the city web site www.brockton.ma.us
Nominations must be received by Wednesday, Feb. 22, 2012.
Please attach no more than a one page essay explaining why you are nominating this woman for an award.
No nomination will be accepted without a completed nomination form and attached essay.

Leone-Cooper is an actress who appeared in The Sopranos, a screenwriter, and an essayist published in The Boston Globe.
She lives in Massachusetts with her husband, actor Chris Cooper, and two rescue dogs.
TheJesse Cooper Foundation funds inclusion and adapted sports for children with special needs, and supports disabled orphans in Romania.

Brockton—Brockton’s Fuller Craft Museum will soon begin a project that will expand the popular museum’s ability to offer programs and exhibits, however, the project will limit the museum’s hours until late spring when construction is expected to be complete.
The changes are expected to minimize any inconvenience to members and the general public.
Starting January 23, the museum will be open:
Thursday 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Free admission will be Thursdays from 5 to 9 p.m. instead of Wednesdays.
Friday to Sunday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
During construction, the café will be unavailable.
This project will add new collections, storage space, curatorial offices, and a new auditorium--along with other improvements which will allow the museum to offer exciting exhibits in the future and build momentum for a strong future as one of the nation's premiere destinations for contemporary crafts.

NORTH EASTON--Rangers and staff at Borderland State Park will host a Winter Greens Hike, Saturday, Jan. 14 from 9 to 10:30 a.m.
Join DCR staff for a fun and frosty trek exploring the park's winter trees, shrubs, and groundcover--if they’re not covered by snow and so far it looks like it won't be.
Participants will hike through the forest, near wetlands, and along a field to learn about winter greens.
Weather and ground conditions will determine the route.
Meet at the Visitor Center for this hike.
The tour is geared for adults and children 8+.
Participants must dress for the weather and wear sturdy winter footwear.
Rain, snow, or icy trails will cancel.

BROCKTON--The Metro South Chamber of Commerce, with Chamber Explorations will host an information meeting to talk about the chamber's upcoming trip to Cuba, a country that until recently has been all but closed to American travel.

The chamber has been issued a specific license by the U.S. Department of the Treasury's Office of Foreign Assets Control, which authorizes registered guests of the program to visit Cuba legally.
Metro South Chamber will offer a 9-day trip to Cuba on May 3. The trip, departing from Miami, is priced at $3,399.

Brockton Library Holds "Name The Hawk" Contest

BROCKTON--Brockton Public Library is holding a "Name The Hawk" contest for residents, patrons, officials and all other members of the public to help give the visiting hawk a nickname.
New Director Elizabeth Marcus Wolfe said the hawk has been spotted countless times over the last few months visiting the surrounding area and especially roasting in a tree at the rear of the libray's parking lot on White Avenue.
Wolfe said she can often see the red-tailed hawk from the second-floor window of her office and patrons and employees are enjoying looking for its visits.
Anyone who has an idea for the hawk's name can fill out a suggestion form at the main circulation desk or children's department desk, or email Sandy Reed at sreed@cobma.us. The library will pick a winner on Tuesday, Jan. 17 after Martin Luther King Day.

Volunteers have put out a call for four twin beds--boxspring and mattress--for a family with four children.

BROCKTON--School on Wheels of Massachusetts is seeking volunteers from around the region to become one-on-one afterschool tutors/mentors and positive adult role models for children experiencing homelessness in New Bedford, Brockton, Middleboro, Norwell, or Stoughton.
The greatest need now is for English- and Spanish-speaking volunteers to tutor at the HarbOur House in New Bedford on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6:30 – 7:30 pm. Volunteer tutor training will be held on Saturday, January 7, 2012, from 10:30 am – 1:00 pm at Harbour House, 713 Shawmut Ave., New Bedford.
School on Wheels tutors help pre-K through 12th grade students overcome obstacles to learning and achieve their full educational potential.
Tutors receive training in effective tutoring strategies and ongoing support from SOWMA’s professional staff.
No prior experience is needed. A three month commitment is requested.
Volunteers are required to go through a 2.5 hour tutor training session before working with a SOWMA student.

Music lovers from across the region will be treated to a toe-tapping variety of festive tunes at the annual Brockton High School Holiday Concert, which will be held tonight Dec. 13 and Wednesday, Dec. 14th in the school’s Edwin Nelson Auditorium. Considered one of the best holiday traditions of the South Shore, the concert features a bevy of bands and choruses that present concertgoers with a wide selection of holiday favorites.
Proceeds from the concerts will benefit the BHS Music Program and the Children’s Advocacy Center.
“This is the most popular concert of the year. The quality of the music, the variety of selections and performances are what keep people coming year after year,” said Brockton Public Schools Music Director Vincent Macrina.

BROCKTON--Break out your Christmas or holiday ornaments and don your Santa hat and head to Main Street Sunday, Nov. 20 for the third annual Santa Hat Day to kick-off the holiday season and break Brockton's own semi-official record of the most people wearing a Santa hat in one place at one time.
Streets around Main Street will be blocked off beginning at about 2 p.m and festivities, including music, holiday coupons for local shopping, raffles and give-aways--including an Apple IPad--will go into full swing at 2:30 p.m.
The official count will take place at 3:30 p.m.
All are invited.
Santa hats will be available for a nominal cost while supplies last.
Last year Brockton, with 872 men, women and children wearing bright red Santa hats, topped the record set by Mullingar, Ireland the year before.
John Merian, co-owner of Tuxedos by Merian, with the help of the Downtown Business Association and others, launched the Santa hat drive three years ago as a way to kick off the holiday season and to honor James Edgar, a late 19th Century Brockton department store owner who is considered to have been the first department store Santa--even beating out the more famous Macy's Santa.
It is also a reminder the 25th annual Holiday Parade and holiday bazaar will take place the following Saturday, Nov. 26 from 1 to 4 p.m.

Charity Guild "Doo Wop" Concert, Dec. 2

BROCKTON--The Charity Guild’s merry and bright celebration of the season, “A Doo-Wop Holiday,” will be held Friday evening, Dec. 2 at the Martin Institute at Stonehill College.

BROCKTON—One of the numerous things Noube Rateau, a Brockton High graduate and producer for Brockton Community Access, learned during the 6 to 8 months he and two other friends spent filming “Silence,” a documentary about drugs and addiction, was the people who escaped the cycle of addiction, mostly did it through education.
“It seemed like the best way to stay away from it or not get involved in it, is education,” Rateau said after the premiere of “Silence” held Tuesday night at Bridgewater State University, where Rateau graduated in 2006.
“Education always seemed to be the outlet,” Rateau said.
The documentary is filmed in Brockton and features Brockton residents from various walks-of-life who tell their stories, often heart-breaking, of their own addictions, or that of their parents, or other family or friends, and how it has affected their lives—-in essence, breaking the silence and stigma that is often attached to addiction.
“Silence,” not only deals with so-called gangster associated, street-level heroin, crack and methamphetamine, but also the scourge of alcohol and prescription pills.
One man, in his mid-20s, tells of his mother’s addiction and how he had to become father, brother and breadwinner to his siblings when he was 11-years-old.
A 20-something woman tells how a close male friend drugged her and then raped her in a horrible and humiliating fashion.
Larry Curtis, who ran for councilor-at-large in 2009, and his wife Peg share the harrows of their son’s addiction, the costs—emotional and financial--of numerous rehab attempts.
A man of the streets, Carly, who many would describe as a derelict, explains how he became an alcoholic and how he cannot live without booze.
“I wish I was dead,” Carly says in the film.
A convicted dealer who spent time in jail regrets his past, but argues if authorities and law enforcement actually wanted to win the drug war it would be over by now except that a lot of jobs and money are involved.
Frankly, anyone who sees the film will believe him.
Rateau, 22, who graduated from Brockton High in 2003, said the next step for the film is to lock-in other colleges and universities for more showings and hopes to have a schedule in January.
After the tours and showings, Rateau said the film will likely be shown on Brockton's cable access station, but in the meantime if anyone is interested in buying a copy of the DVD they can contact him by phone or email.(See below)
After Tuesday night's premiere, there was a question and answer session during which Rateau called for the more than 200 people to get involved in their community and pay attention to what’s happening in government because in the end any solutions come down to policy—government action.
At the very least, Rateau said, Brockton and other communities have elections Tuesday, Nov. 8 and people should learn who is on what side of the issues, and then:
“Go vote,” Rateau said.

BROCKTON--Bridgewater State University will host a premiere presentation of "Silence," a documentary about drugs and addiction inspired by true stories from the local area.
The documentary is written and directed by Noube Rateau, an employee of Brockton Cable, who said the film shows the reality of addiction and drug use from those who have lived it and survived it.
The preview will be held Tuesday, Oct. 25, at Moakley Auditorium at Bridgewater State University.

BROCKTON--From evening wear to upscale urban styles to cutting edge every day T's and jeans, Brockton's Downtown by Design showed off its original fashions during a fundraiser for Brockton Library Foundation Tuesday night.
"It was a great night," said Anne Beauregard, a foundation member and all-around library volunteer who was one of nearly 100 men, women and children who watched as
hot young men and women modeled even hotter clothing designed and made especially for the event by Guilherme "Will" Barbosa and Karen "Special K" Brown, who together opened Downtown by Design on Main Street.
"First of all, it was a learning experience, but I definitely loved the outcome," Barbosa said after the show, which featured not only young men and women modeling the designs, but an appearance by the Darlington Braves, a group of adolescent cheerleaders from Pawtucket, Rhode Island, singer-songwriter Ray Diamonds (Pictured in photo below) and rapper Mic Ross.
The event was held in the library's conference room and featured a DJ playing club music as the models took their turns on the runway to cheers and shouts from audience members--many who were friends and family.
The crowd included young and old, elected officials or their representatives, MetroSouth Chamber of Commerce officials, and the library's new director Elizabeth Marcus Wolfe, who took over the job about three weeks ago after former director Harry Williams III left to take over at Quincy's Crane Public Library.
Coming from Holliston, Wolfe said the fashion show was a welcome blast of diversity, camaraderie, and positive city life.
"What a wonderful way to be introduced to the community," Wolfe said. Barbosa said Downtown by Design will host another "invite only" fashion show to be held at Brockton's V.F.W., Saturday, Nov. 12 from 7 to 9 p.m. that will be followed by dancing and music. Family and Community Resources will host the "Hearts and Hands for Hope" 5K Run/Walk to End Domestic Violence, Saturday, Oct. 1, 2011 beginning with a 9 a.m. registration at Raymond Elementary School.
In recognition of October as domestic violence FCR, in a prepared statement, hopes to help those who seek services and counseling in order to escape the terror, physical abuse and potentially life-threatening harm they face each day from domestic violence.
Family and Community Resources has experienced a 20% increase in demand for their services over the last year, so fundraising dollars are needed more than ever. Support of this race will go a long way to help provide the necessary services to individuals and children effected in our local communities.
The start and finish line will be at the Raymond Elementary School, 125 Oak Street, Brockton.
Registration begins at 9 a.m.
At 10:45 a.m. a kids' 1/4 Mile Fun Run will begin. The kids race will be followed by an all ages 5K Run/Walk at 11:15 a.m.

BROCKTON--Former Red Sox pitcher Bill "Spaceman" Lee, Brockton Rox coach Ed Noddle and Ron Shafer, a former Wall Street Journal writer-editor who has written a history of the Dodgers baseball club, will talk Thursday night at Joe Angelo's Cafe about Brockton's connection to the Dodgers through William "Gunner" McGunnigle, a Brockton native and early manager of the Dodgers who developed and wore the first catcher's mitt in the late 1800s.
A presentation will be held at Joe Angelo's beginning at 6 p.m., Sept. 22.
Cost is $20 and includes a buffet dinner.
Proceeds will help defray costs for a remembrance plaque to McGunnigle which will be displayed at Campanelli Stadium.

BROCKTON--ARTS at Christ Church, entering its 17th year, will host its first event of the season, "Folk Café," an evening of traditional and contemporary folk music Saturday, September, 24 at 7:30 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall of Christ Congregational Church, 1350 Pleasant St., Brockton.
The performance will feature Gail Finnie Rundlett
Gail Finnie Rundlett is a folk singer who has a strong following in the Boston area. She is a singer/songwriter who performs traditional to contemporary folk music and songs in the gospel tradition.
She has recorded a number of CD’s which will be on sale at the concert. Her latest CD is called “Heart of a Believer.”
Julian Rundlett, Gail's son, is a professional singer/songwriter. His music is a stylish mix of jazz, rock, pop, R&B, funk, and gospel. Julian plays with several local bands, churches and recording studios.
Admission is a free will offering and refreshments will be served.

BROCKTON--The City of Brockton will hold a ceremony to commemorate the 10th anniversary of 9/11 on Sunday, Sept. 11th at 11 a.m.
The event will be held at City Hall Plaza, 45 School St., to honor those who lost their lives, and to recognize the City’s public safety personnel for their continuing dedication to the community.
“It is hard to believe that we are marking the 10th anniversary of September 11th this year,” said Mayor Linda M. Balzotti in a prepared statment.
“While time has passed, the dramatic impact that day had on our nation remains vivid in our minds. This ceremony provides an opportunity for Brocktonians to come together and honor the legacy of the individuals who lost their lives on that day, and to show appreciation to our public safety personnel,” she said.
All are welcome.

The ceremony will include tributes by the Brockton Police Department Honor Guard, the Brockton Fire Department Honor Guard, and the Brockton Firefighters Pipes & Drums.

Sea Of White Fills Shaw's Center

BROCKTON--More than 200 men and women sporting all white suits, dresses, slacks and blouses created a sea of white during Emerging 40's "White Party," held last Friday night at the Shaw's Center in Brockton.
"I was really pleased with the turnout," said Drew Ambroise, founder of the non-profit organization that seeks to connect the area's professionals.
More than 200 of the area's young professionals, and business and homeowners sipped cocktails and mingled, during the inaugural event Friday, Aug. 26 that featured music, dancing and appetizers.
Among the partygoers was Mark Resnick, Brockton's new executive director of Brockton Redeveopment Authority, who gave a 10 to 15 minute synopsis of why businesses should reinvest in Brockton.
Also in attendance from Mayor Linda Balzotti's staff were Koren Cappiello, director of community and social services and Maysa de Oliveira, director of constituent services.

Brockton Couple Share Last Dance Today--Always

BROCKTON--Anne Paiva-Thibeault for the last 23 years has always saved the last dance for husband Eddie, and Thursday evening was no different when the couple enjoyed the music of the Corvairs at Heights Crossing for the season finale of the mayor's summer concert series.
"I'm her friend, companion, lover and husband," Eddie Thibeault said in between twirling Anne (pictured at top) on and off the dance space in front of the Corvairs, who played a mix of music from the 1950s to today's top 40 that had the scores of concert goers who came from all points in Brockton singing, clapping and for many--dancing.
Anne Paiva-Thibeault said the song "Save the last dance for me," by the Drifters, one of the many foot-stomping tunes played by the Corvairs, is a perfect song for the couple.
"We love dancing and I'm going to save every one for him," she said.
The Thibeault's weren't the only ones who could not sit in a chair and watch as the Corvairs rocked Heights Crossing.

Sheila Morrissey, who joined pal Theresa Dimond (pictured at right) in a frenzied dance set to the Beatle's "Twist and Shout," said the mayor's weekly concert series is one of her favorites especially because each week there is different kinds of music.
"Every generation is my generation of music," Morrissey said. "I even like rap," she said.

Many of the people at the concert are friends who spend time at Heights Crossing nt only dancing, but playing card games like Barbara Murphy, Virginia Tibbetts (pictured at right), Audrey Vacca and Frances Metcalf, who get together to play Whist.
Virginia Tibbetts, who underwent hip surgery last year and is slowly recovering, said she met the girls at Heights Crossing after watching all of the summer's concerts on local cable TV which broadcasts the shows throughout the week.

"I wasn't going to watch it on TV this time," Tibbetts said. "Tonight--I want to dance," she said.

BROCKTON--The annual Brockton Cape Verdean Day Festival will be held Sunday, July 31 on the grounds of the Fuller Craft Museum.
There will be live bands, numerous performances, children's games, activities and rides, and a host of food vendors.
Most activities are free and all are welcome.

BROCKTON--School officials will host Summefest Aug. 5-7 in honor of the 40th anniversary of the high school and community schools program.
“Summerfest was a great way for people of all ages to get together, have some fun and enjoy being a part of Brockton,” said Community Schools Director Kathleen Smith in a prepared statement.
“Community Schools is meant to be a center of activity for children and adults, and we see this project as a way to kick-start one of Brockton’s best events and get people excited to celebrate summer and the city--together,” she said.
Summerfest was launched in 1971 to cap off the yearlong celebration of the new Brockton High School and the recently launched Community Schools program.
The event, which ran for many years, was a blend of music, food, crafts and activities for families.
Summerfest will return August 5-7 with events and activities for residents of all ages.
The revived Summerfest will kick off Friday night August 5 with a Summerfest dance at 7 p.m. at the Shaw’s Center.
Attendees will get to kick it up with their classmates, friends and neighbors, take in a Brockton Rox baseball game, and dance the night away to the tunes of their youth.
The family-themed Summerfest activities will take place from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday August 6th at Brockton High School. S
chool and community groups, athletic organizations and friends from all over the city will organize games, crafts and activities for children of all ages.

BROCKTON--The Brockton Rox will celebrate an extended homestand this week with beer specials, special events and an appearance by former New England Patriot Troy Brown, who will throw out the first pitch Saturday, July 23.
Game time is 7:05 p.m. when the Rox, on a 12-1 hotstreak, will take on Newark.
Brown will sign autographs and throw out the first pitch.
Also Saturday night, the Rox will celebrate National Hot Dog day by giving out a voucher for a free hot dog to the first 1,000 fans.
The Rox are also trying to set the Guinness World Record for the World's Most Expensive Hot Dog.

BROCKTON--The annual series of summer concerts at The Patio at Heights Crossing in Brockton will kickoff tonight at 6 p.m. with The Villainaires performing a mix of music from the 1950s to the 1970s.
“These outdoor concerts are a wonderful way to spend an evening, and come together as a community” said Mayor Linda M. Balzotti in a prepared statement. “Attendees get to see great live music and at no cost,” she said.
The free concerts will be held every Thursday night at 6 p.m. until Aug. 11.

BROCKTON--The 137th Brockton Fair opens Thursday, June 30 with new rides, new attractions and magic shows by Brockton native and Las Vegas regular comedian/hypnotist Brian Campbell.
Fairgrounds open Thursday, June 30 at 5 p.m. The fair will run until Sunday, July 10.
Brockton native Campbell, "The Magic Guy," brings his magic act to the fair this year and joins Walker Brothers' International Circus, "The Grizzly Experience," a live grizzly bear show and "The Marvelous Mutts," a dog agility show.
There will also be rides, a petting zoo, woodworking, demolition derby, motocross, and many of the other fair favorites.
Fireworks will be held Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights and Monday, Fourth of July.

BROCKTON--Volunteers are needed to participate in a neighborhood clean-up Saturday, June 25 in the Campello section of Brockton.
The event will begin at 28 Sheppard St. at 8:30 a.m. Saturday, June 25.
“Events like these build momentum in the community, and foster a sense of ownership among neighbors,” said Mayor Linda M. Balzotti in a prepared statement.
“By working together to beautify their neighborhood, residents are also making personal connections,” she said.
Volunteers will receive supplies donated by Home Depot and begin cleaning up a vacant lot and adjacent streets in the Campello area.
“The Brockton Housing Authority, Mayor Balzotti, the Brockton Redevelopment Authority and BIC have made the revitalization of Campello a high priority,” said Housing Authority Executive Director Richard Sergi.
“This clean-up is our way of telling Campello residents that they count,” he said.
Last year’s event, which started on Tribou Street, was successful because residents not only participated, but followed up on their own, said Sergi.
“The clean-up is a great way to bring neighborhood residents together to complete a project that will have a direct positive impact on their lives,” said Marc Resnick, Executive Director of the Brockton Redevelopment Authority.
“It also helps to promote healthy neighborhoods and also supports other efforts in the area," he said.
A celebration barbeque will follow the clean-up.
The clean-up co-sponsored by: the Office of Mayor Linda M. Balzotti; the Brockton Redevelopment Authority, the Brockton Housing Authority; Self Help, Inc.; Neighborhood Housing Services of the South Shore; the Cape Verdean Association; Brockton Interfaith Community, Walgreens; and Home Depot.

Manning Pool Opens June 27

BROCKTON--Manning Pool, located behind Brockton High School, will open Monday, June 27.
Pool hours will be from 1 to 6 p.m. and the pool will be open seven days a week.
Passes for the pool are now available for purchase at the Elections Commission office, located on the first floor of City Hall, 45 School St.
Passes will also be on sale at the Manning Pool after it opens Monday, June 27.
Season passes are $45 per family, for up to five people; $22 per person; and $18 for senior citizens, age 60 and up.
Daily passes are $3 per day for Massachusetts residents, and $5 per person, per day for non-Massachusetts residents.
The pool will be open until Sunday, August 28.
The Manning Pool has a gazebo, state-of-the-art play area, and multiple water features.
There is also a slide, snack bar, locker rooms, and a 1.5 acre grassy area.

Good Sam Dedicates Healing Garden

BROCKTON—Middleboro resident Lorna Brunelle, who is a 6-year survivor of cancer, had a little advice to give those who may be battling the deadly disease.
“Stay positive, ask for help, reach out to family and friends for support and take care of yourself,” Brunelle said. “Take naps. Don’t do the dishes. Don’t make the bed—I made my bed everyday of my life until I was diagnosed with thyroid cancer. Some things don’t have to be done right away,” she said. (Pictured above at right)
Brunelle, 40, was diagnosed with thyroid cancer at 33. She has been cancer-free for six years and was the keynote speaker for Good Samaritan Medical Center’s cancer survivor celebration and dedication of its new healing garden held Thursday, June 16.
Brunelle gave an inspiring message and was surrounded by several young women who are her students in the Miss America Pageant program. She has self-published a book, “Dirty Bombshell: From Thyroid Cancer Back to Fabulous;” she is a staff member at Boston Casting Inc. and is owner of Burt Wood School of Performing Arts and Alley Theatre in Middleboro.
Dr. Rohini Sakhuja, chairman of the Cancer Care Committee, said during a nearly two-hour celebration, that the healing garden is a place for patients and their families to find peace and calm during what can be difficult treatments.
Sakhuja gave the numerous cancer survivors in the crowd a show of support.
“They have the nerve, the guts—the guts to overcome all the obstacles that come at them,” Sakhuja said.
The healing garden is also open to the public and the hospital’s employees, but it isn’t open to those smoking cigarettes.
“There’s no smoking in the healing garden,” Sakhuja noted.

BROCKTON--The Taunton River Watershed Alliance will host its annual canoe and camping trip beginning Saturday June 25 at 9 a.m.
The river run kicks-off on the Town River, continues on to a cookout with entertainment and camping at Titicut in Bridgewater.
After the overnight campout participants paddle down the Taunton River to the Weir Village where the run ends at about 4 p.m. Sunday, June 26.
Exact locations depend on water conditions and will be announced later.
The fee is $30 per canoe/kayak for TRWA members and $40 per canoe/kayak for non-TRWA participants.

Good Sam Healing Garden, Cancer Survivor Celebration June 16

BROCKTON--Good Samaritan Medical Center will dedicate a healing garden and celebrate cancer survivors in two special ceremonies on June 16.
The garden is designed to bring a sense of peace and calm and promote healing of the body, mind and spirit, officials said in a prepared statement.
The garden will be located in front of the Good Samaritan Radiation Oncology Center, 818 Oak St. on the campus of the medical center.
“Promoting a sense of well-being is an important part of treatment for our patients,” said Good Samaritan Medical Center President Jeff Liebman in the statement. “We hope this beautiful garden will bring many peaceful moments and a renewed sense of hope to our patients as they come and go from their medical appointments,” he said.
The garden was designed by Carol R. Johnson Associates of Boston. Contractors were Greenscape, Inc., of Taunton.
The healing garden ceremony will begin at 3:30 p.m. with the cancer survivors’ celebration set to follow at 4 p.m.
Lorna Brunelle, of Middleboro, a cancer survivor, author, vocal coach and owner of The Burt Wood School of Performing Arts will be the keynote speaker at the cancer survivors’ event, which will include an ice cream social.
Brunelle will be joined by area pageant winners including Molly Whalen, Miss Taunton 2011, who will serve as greeters.

BROCKTON--Brockton After Dark is looking for youth between the ages of 13 and 20 who want to spend a few hours in the evenings playing soccer, basketball, volleyball, acting, art classes,open mic, community service projects and awareness, hip-hop dancing, boxing or swimming.
Brockton After Dark's programs begin June 27 and run to August 19.
All activities are free.
Programs take place on various evenings depending on the activity. Some activities like basketball at the Boys and Girls Club can go from 6 p.m. until 10 p.m., or hip-hop dancing from 6 to 9 p.m. or art classes at The Fuller Museum from 6 to 7:30 p.m.
Most sites provide dinner for participants.
Brockton After Dark is also looking for coaches, mentors, food coordinators and volunteers to help with the numerous sports and arts programs.

Memorial Day Parade Kicks Off, May 30 10 a.m.

BROCKTON--Brockton’s annual Memorial Day Parade will be held Monday, May 30 and will include a special plaque dedication in honor of U.S. Army Capt. Anthony Palermo at City Hall Plaza.
The parade begins at the VFW Monument on Legion Parkway at 10 a.m.
The parade will proceed down Warren Avenue to Belmont Street, before turning left toward Main Street. The route will then turn right onto Crescent Street and conclude at City Hall Plaza.
Immediately following the parade, there will be a special plaque dedication ceremony for Palermo, a Brockton High School graduate who was a member of the 1st Battalion, 18th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division.
Palermo attended Norwich University and was killed in combat operations in Baghdad on April 7, 2006. (Correction: Palermo died April 6, 2007)

Rox Win 2011 Home Opener

BROCKTON—Former Red Sox Bill Buckner notched his first win as manager of the Brockton Rox Thursday night as the Rox opened the 2011 Can-Am League season with a 3-1 win over the Worcester Tornadoes.
Although the stands were sparsely filled die-hard fans like Brockton resident Patty Smith and her nearly 6-year-old niece Rylee Smith (Pictured below, left to right) who got a signed baseball and early birthday gift—she turns 6 on June 9-- from former Red Sox pitcher Bob Stanley.

Stanley (Pictured at left) gabbed and joked with fans and signed sports memorabilia as he made his way around Campanelli Stadium before and after throwing the ceremonial first pitch which did make it easily across home plate—a feat fans and Stanley jokingly wondered would happen prior to the throw.
Stanley also joked about his appearance at the home opener.
“I don’t know. I think they’re paying me a buck,” Stanley said.
Catcher Chris Grossman hit a solo homerun in the second to begin the scoring for the Rox after pitcher Mike Smith got himself out of a bases loaded jam in the Worcester half of the second. (Pictured below, left)
The Rox perhaps showed its manager’s desire to win games by playing a little small ball in the third inning when outfielder Chris Valenica laid down a bunt to move shortstop Dominic Ramos to second after Ramos reached first base on a single.
First baseman Mike Falu drove in the first of two RBI and second single of the game to score Ramos from second.
Falu earned his second RBI in the fifth when he hit another single to bring home Ramos who hit a double to put him in scoring position.
The Rox will play Worcester tonight, Saturday and Sunday for the Memorial Day Weekend season-launching home stand.

Rox Open Season May 26, Ceremonies To Mark 10th Anniversary

BROCKTON—The Brockton Rox head into its 10th anniversary season sporting a new logo, new uniforms and new management as the Can-Am League baseball team looks to expand on a modest uptick in attendance last season.
“We’re heading into a new decade—new management, new uniforms. Every team has to reinvent itself. We’re hoping to keep growing and if the weather holds out, we’re looking toward a good season,” said new Chief Executive Officer Chris Carmunicci, who after two seasons as manager has shed that title and taken the lead in overall operations.
The Rox open the season Thursday night May 26 with a four-game home stand against the Worcester Tornadoes with special ceremonies that will celebrate the team’s milestones, most notably the team’s 10th anniversary.
Ceremonies begin at about 6:15 p.m. and first pitch around 7:05.
The team heads to Pittsfield Saturday May 21 for 2:05 p.m. exhibition game with the Colonials and wraps up exhibition weekend with home-on-home games against Worcester.
Carmunicci said because of the good weather last summer attendance averaged about 2,500 visitors per game at Campanelli Stadium’s about 5,000-seat facility—which equated into higher ticket and food and beverage sales from the year before--a modest rise that leaves room for guarded optimism.
“Our product has been good, we have great promotions, it’s a fun place to be for a game, and we’re looking at ways to increase revenues,” Carmunicci said.
"As long as we're profitable it's a good thing, because we haven't been in about the past 5 or 6 years, so a profit is a good thing," he said.
The front office is looking into ways to increase revenues, including greater use of the stadium, including the possibility of outdoor winter college hockey games or tournaments at the stadium.

Buckner’s arrival was announced over the winter and topped with a Hot Stove Banquet in January that featured the new skipper, and Boston Red Sox greats Jimy Williams and Brockton favorite Bill “The Spaceman” Lee, who had the 400-plus audience rolling with laughter with his hard-core, unabashed hatred of the Yankees.
The Hot Stove event created a winter buzz around low-keyed Buckner that is expected—and hoped—to leave its mark on the field.
“From Bill’s standpoint he’s going to be able to talk about baseball—pro-baseball and all that comes with it,” Carmunicci said. “It’s been an instant respect. An instant rapport, an instant synergy,” he said.
In the last two years, the Rox have made it into the playoffs but fell short behind poor-pitching in key situations and teams that were hot at the right time.
“We’ve been close,” Carmunicci said.
Outfielder Chris Valencia, a 24-year-old California native who won the Can-Am League’s Rookie of the League award in 2009, shook his head at his performance last year and hung his head in what appeared to be shame because he didn’t repeat his .309batting average in 2009, although in 2010 he averaged .280, tied for second in the league with 24 doubles and popped more than 100 hits in each of his two seasons as a Can-Am player.
Valencia said under Buckner’s tutelage and with hard work and sweat, he and the team are eyeing that elusive championship.

BROCKTON--Brockton businesses will be highlighted for their perseverance, entrepreneurship and contributions to the city by the MetroSouth Chamber of Commerce, Brockton City Council and a coalition of business associations in honor of National Small Business Week.
Four businesses: Sunset Cafe, Executive Cuts, Waitt Funeral Home and Dwyer's Glass are the recipients of the first "Brockton--Let's Get Down To Business" recognition award initiated by Ward 2 City Councilor Thomas Monahan and modeled after a similar program in the City of Lawrence.
In a prepared statement, Monahan said afer seeing the recognition program in Lawrence and hearing from businesses how difficult it is to survive in a struggling city during the tax rate classification hearing in the winter, it would be a good idea to highlight more of Brockton's success stories.
"It hit home with me that many of these businesses are the employers of our residents and the contributors to various community groups and they don't even get a pat on the back," Monahan said. "The businesses being recognized through this program are examples of why one should bring their business to Brockton. They are the biggest cheerleaders of the city. The more businesses we bring in, the fewer burdens it has on our taxpayers," he said.
The four businesses received a certificate of accomplishment from the City Council and Mayor Linda Balzotti last Monday.
On Wednesday, May 18 Metro Chamber of Commerce will host its annual Small Business Expo and Awards Luncheon from 1:30 to 3 p.m.
The free Expo will be held from 10 a.m. to Noon and is free to all.

Among the projects he has directed are the Fellowship for Regional Sustainable Development, the City of Portland economic development strategy, the Talent Dividend Network and an evaluation of small business lending strategies in Maine.

Road Race Supports Food Pantries Sunday

BROCKTON--Six food pantries in the Brockton area will reap the rewards of the sweat of hundreds of runners and walkers during the Mutual Bank Citywide Race Against Hunger which will be held Sunday May 15 at D.W. Field Park at 5 p.m.
The race features a 3.5 mile loop around the park and a 2.2 mile walk for those who want to take their time.
There will also be a 50-yard dash for youngsters.
Day-of-race registration is $20 for adults. Runners and walkers should head to the starting line and officials table which will be positioned just north of the tower. Registration will be held from 3:30 to 4:45 p.m.
Registration for children between 3 and 10 is the donation of a non-perishable food item.
Trophies will be awarded to the top male and female finishers in the 3.5-mile run and to the top male and female runners under 18.
The first 100 walkers and runners to register will get Race Against Hunger T-shirts. Mayor Linda Balzotti is scheduled to speak, and food and drinks will be available. Participating pantries are The Charity Guild, Catholic Charities South, First Evangelical Lutheran Church, Full Gospel Tabernacle, Lincoln Congregational Church and the St. Vincent de Paul Society of St. Edith Stein Church.

BROCKTON--The Brockton Garden Club will hold its annual flower sale Saturday, May 14 from 8:30 to 11 a.m. at Brockton Park Department, 45 Meadow Lane.
There is always a wide variety of perennials, shrubs, ground covers, grasses, herbs and much more to choose from at prices that are unbeatable.
Most of the plants that will be on sale are clippings or grown locally from members' own gardens.
Many of the club members will be on hand to offer planting advice and best growing practices for each plant.
Admission is free and all are welcome.
Proceeds from the sale help fund the club's numerous city-wide civic projects, including keeping the main library pretty and as pictured above, creating a field of spring daffodils at D.W. Field Park with bulbs donated by Home Depot.
Meadow Lane is off Main Street on the West Bridgewater border across from HarborOne Credit Union and at the former site of the Campello swimming pool.
Residents also looking to recycle their plastic pots can bring them to the sale and the club will reuse them or properly dispose of them.

BROCKTON - The City of Brockton Office of Veterans’ Services is seeking volunteers to help place American flags on the graves of deceased veterans at cemeteries in Brockton to commemorate their service to the nation.
Flag placement will occur throughout the week of May 16, 2011.
Those interested in volunteering can meet each day at Veterans’ Services, located in the basement of City Hall, 45 School St. at 9 a.m. and 1p.m.
For those who wish to volunteer but cannot arrive at these times, a sign will be posted on the door of the Veterans’ Affairs office door stating which cemetery is being flagged that day.

From 4 to 7 p.m. at Brockton City Hall, public officials, police and fire personnel and church leaders will host a remembrance to honor all of those who serve the community from government officials to men and women in the armed forces.
Following the city hall event Faith Family Life Church in Brockton will host a celebration, "God and Country," dedicated to the men and women who have served the U.S. as community and government leaders and military personnel during a celebration from 7 to 9 p.m. at the church.

BROCKTON—Local private dick Mark Chauppetta hopes his unvarnished stories about catching men and women cheating on their significant others and spouses will be enough fodder for “shock jock” Howard Stern Tuesday, when Chauppetta appears on Stern’s popular Sirius satellite radio show.
“I like to think I can hang with Howard. I’ll find out. But I have to admit I’m excited, but I am nervous,” Chauppetta said hours before he will appear on Stern’s show.

Chauppetta will share the microphone with Stern Tuesday morning, May 3 and is scheduled for 7 a.m., one hour after Stern’s show begins at 6 a.m.
The appearance is to support Chauppeta’s self-published book, “Happens All the Time: Cheating in the Good Ol’ U.S.A.” a naked look at love and sex in America as seen through the eyes of a private investigator hired to follow the love of some people loves to prove or deny they are being faithful.
Chauppetta, who recently moved his office from downtown Brockton to West Bridgewater, has been a private detective for nearly 20 years.
He has caught men and women from all over the South Shore, U.S. and the world sneaking into hotels, motels, back seats of cars and nearly every other place people can engage in affairs and clandestine relationships behind the backs of their loved ones.
Chauppetta said the real-life work of a private detective is far different from what is depicted on television and invites all to take a close and unexpected look at the sexual morality of American men and women.
“It’s funny, insightful and not like any other private investigative book out there,” Chauppetta said. “It’s hard-core, gum-shoe, tell it like it is s**t,” Chauppetta said.
The Stern appearance is also a way to continue spreading the word about his documentary, “A Father’s Fight,” which follows Chauppetta as he puts his body on the line taking on much younger athletes for a Mixed Martial Arts competition to raise money for Muscular Dystrophy in honor of his 15-year-old twin sons Troy and Andrew who fight Duchenne Syndrome everyday.
“A Father’s Fight” was directed by WXBR’s Ron van Dam and Peter Cyzmbor.
Fifty-percent of proceeds from Chauppetta’s book will support Duchenne MD.

BROCKTON--Hundreds of Brockton residents will take part in the 7th annual "Keep Brockton Beautiful Day," Saturday, April 23.
The event will take place rain or shine.
Teams, clubs and individuals will spread across the city Saturday morning to clean up litter and trash along the city's streets, in its parks and on its open spaces.
Interested participants can register for this city-wide cleanup day the morning of the event from 7:30 to 9 a.m. at Heights Crossing, at 35 Christy Place.
The cleanup takes place in numerous locations across the city and runs from 9 a.m. to Noon.
T-shirts will be given to volunteers at registration.
After the cleanup, participants are invited to return to Heights Crossing for a free barbeque.

BROCKTON--Brockton adolescents and teenagers will take part in numerous activities for Global Youth Service Day Saturday, April 16, including creating murals of organizations and agencies that support the city's youth and a Downtown 2K Walk that steps off from Legion Parkway at 9:30 a.m.
Activities begin at 9 a.m. at the Boys and Girls Club of Brockton, 233 Warren Ave., and Brockton Teen Center, 891 Montello St.
Students who don't feel they are artistic enough to join the Mayor's Youth Council mural project can take part in a host of other activites.
Volunteeer oppportunities include:
*collecting and organizing non-perishable food items for the Greater Boston Food Bank;
*collecting and sorting school supplies for Brockton's School on Wheels;
*making and sending get well cards for troops;
*making and sending academic enrichment sheets and friendship bracelets for Brockton youth in local hospitals;
*clean ups of the surrounding neighborhood;
*painting the walls of the Warren Avenue club;

Coins, Currency Fill Brockton's Libraries

BROCKTON—Wearing an authentic 17th Century beaver felt hat and blazer sporting numerous pins from other National Coin Week exhibits, Brockton resident Richard Hand places replicas of $1, $5, $20, $500 or even $1,000 Confederate currency into one of several glass cases filled with copies of vintage bills that will be on display at Brockton’s public libraries for this year’s annual homage to what makes the world go ‘round: Money.
As Hand designs the West Branch exhibit, his traveling medicine-man style garb and infectious history chatter about each bill causes a stir among children and adolescents who peek into the glass case and ask many questions--most popular: “Are they real?”
Hand gives them a mischievous look that makes him resemble a smiling and lovable Alice Cooper and tells them to bring their parents and come to Brockton Public Library’s Main Branch Saturday April 16 at 1 p.m. for the show.
“All the real stuff will be there on the 16th,” Hand said, handing out flyers for the exhibit.
This year’s exhibition and coin celebration will take place April 16 at 1 p.m. at the Main Branch library, 304 Main St.
The theme of this year’s National Coin Week held from April 17 to 23 is “Blue, Gray & Greenbacks: Money of the Civil War.”
All across the U.S., schools, libraries and coin collecting clubs and individuals are pairing up to bring youngsters and adults alike a glimpse of their extensive collections of Union and Confederate currency, coins, tokens, medals and other memorabalia that tell the tales of the dark and difficult days of the American Civil War.
Today, April 12, is the 150th anniversary, or sesquicentenial, of the firing on Union held Fort Sumter, South Carolina, by the Confederacy and marked the opening battle of the Civil War in 1861.
The event at Brockton Public Library is free and includes a Hand-led basics of currency and coin collecting workshop, talks by local collectors and experts about their pieces, and a slideshow and presentation by Richard Balbaton, a well-known collector and dealer from Rhode Island.
Hand said each participant may bring one coin to have appraised by experts and for help and advice in joining clubs or learning the hobby.
There will be raffles of a newly minted and uncirculated 2011 Gettysburg Quarter that comes with a case specially made by Anacs to commemorate Brockton’s 2011 National Coin Week Celebration.
Every participant will receive raffle tickets for other prizes such as three donated Silver Eagles worth about $50 each, special coin collecting folders and Silver Kennedy half-dollars—a valuable commodity in the rising silver, gold and copper market.
Every participant who registers for the event or while supplies last will receive an envelope full of numerous giveaways including commemorative pens, pencils, book marks, a President Andrew Johnson 2011 Presidential dollar, and three 1 cent pieces.
“Everybody who comes will at least be up $1.03,” Hand joked.
Hand, 50, a former Marine, has been hosting National Coin Week exhibits at the Brockton’s libraries for six years.
It began in the basement of the West Branch library where last week he delighted youngsters and adults alike with his beaver felt hat and obvious love of currency, coins, the intricate designs and stories of their history.
The first year about 20 people attended the exhibit, Hand said. Last year, more than 80 people attended and because of its growth, library officials have offered the spacious Children’s Room for this year’s event.
Richard Balbaton, who will host a slideshow presentation of 72 different Civil War era currency notes from 50-cent paper pieces to the elusive Confederate $1,000 bill, said “graying” collectors like himself hope younger generations who may eventually move to plastic currency keep his beloved hobby alive if only to appreciate the craftsmanship in a quarter or $1 bill.
Balbaton chuckled that if the value of the extraordinary art work on present and past bills and coins is lost or replaced by plastic cards, likely all of the value of American currency will be lost because without the gold or silver standard supporting American money there is no value in it—except for collectors.
“Our currency today is 110 percent based on a lot of hot air in Washington,” Balbaton joked.
Hand, a veteran’s affairs legislative aide for Rockland American Legion Post #147, said he always loved coins and currency since childhood, but it wasn’t until 1998 did he really get back into the hobby and since has tried to strike a minted passion for coin and currency collecting in a new generation.
“Just to see the kids and how much they love it--It's indescribable,” Hand said.

1st Annual Mark Creedon Scholarship Run/Walk Saturday

BROCKTON--Family and frends of Mark Creedon will host the 1st annual Mark Creedon Memorial Run/Walk this Saturday, April 9 at D.W. Field Park at 10 a.m.
Creedon, a well known young man in the area died unexpectedly in February.
Proceeds from the race will benefit a student at Cardinal Spellman High School.
Pre-registration is still available. Race day registration and number pick-up begins at 8 a.m.
The run is a distance of 3.5 miles and the walk is 2.2 miles. Both begin at Tower Hill in Brockton's D.W. Field Park, near the Oak Street entrance.
There is no minimum age to participate. Children under 10 are free and strollers are welcome.

BROCKTON--MyTurn Inc., a dropout prevention and intervention program for at-risk youth, will host a "2K Walk4Kids" Saturday, April 16, 2011 beginning at 9:30 a.m. at HarborOne Credit Union at Legion Parkway in Brockton.
The walk will celebrate Global Youth Service Day set for between April 15-17, and has been coordinated with the Boys & Girls Club, the YMCA and the United Way.

BROCKTON--A 5K Walk-a-thon to raise awareness of domestic violence and support Brockton social service programs will be held Sunday June 5, 2011 at the Raymond Elementary School.
The walk’s coordinator is Brockton resident Lovern Augustine, recent winner of Mrs. Ethnic World International in Los Angeles, Calif., and is reigning Mrs. Ethnic New England.
Since winning the pageant Augustine has been working to promote awareness against domestic violence and helped sponsor Boston's recent White Ribbon event (Augustine pictured in poster above) when men pledged to help stop domestic violence.
Augustine, one of the recent winners of Brockton's Commission on Women "Women of the Year" awards, was a victim of domestic violence who also witnessed as a child her mother being abused by her father.
The walk will begin and end at the Raymond Elementary School and steps off at 10 a.m.
The cost for each entrant is $20, however all donations more than $20 will be accepted.
Proceeds will help support Penelope's Place domestic violence shelter and Family and Community Resources in Brockton. The walk will take place rain or shine.

BROCKTON--MTV's hit reality show "I Used to be Fat" is heading into its second season and will be hosting casting calls for high school seniors, including at the Westgate Mall in Brockton April 9 from Noon to 3 p.m.
Michael Cimino, casting director for 3Ball Productions, the company that produces the show for MTV, said casting crews will be in Brockton April 9 and are looking for students in the Class of 2011 who want to lose 40 to 100 pounds before heading into their freshman year in college.
Candidates MUST be seniors in high school--male or female--who intend to attend college in the fall.

BROCKTON--Brockton High School's ballroom dancers will present "Juke Box 1944" Friday, April 1 from 6 to 10 p.m. at the VFW, 283 N. Quincy St. in Brockton.
The evening of ball room dancing and big banc music will feature Brockton High's Ballroom Dancers, a volunteer group who have learned the dance style at the high school after classes.
The Olde Kids on the Block, an 18-piece ballroom dance band will play music from the 1930s and 1940s.
Semi-formal dress is required. Singles are welcome.
A buffet dinner will be served from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m.
All World War II veterans will be admitted free.

BROCKTON—Eight-year-old Thomas Vassil did not hesitate to double dip a free standing chunk of dark chocolate with walnuts into an oozing and tantalizing chocolate fountain displayed by Brockton's Gowell’s Candy during the 19th annual “Taste of MetroSouth,” hosted by the MetroSouth Chamber of Commerce.
“It’s the first time I’ve ever seen a chocolate fountain,” Vassil said with lips covered in chocolate and giving an enthusiastic thumbs up. “I love it. It’s amazing,” he said. (Pictured above)
Vassil was one of hundreds who attended Wednesday night’s food extravaganza held at the Shaw’s Center that featured more than 60 MetroSouth area restaurants, shops,
bakeries, schools and caterers who served up tid-bits, helpings and slices of their specialties, including hot and cold pasta dishes, seasoned beef, meatballs smothered in a variety of sauces, and a multitude of diet-breaking cupcakes, brownies, cakes and chocolates.
Some of those serving dishes were students from Brockton High School’s Fine Arts Café, who served delicious Greek Spinach fillo dough appetizers filled with sautéed spinach, feta cheese, red onions and tomatoes topped with a tasty vinaigrette. While their own offering was delicious, nearly all of the culinary program students who had a chance to try recipes from the other tables agreed with Thomas Vassil that they were drawn to the table where chocolate actually flowed.
“I love the chocolate,” said Ellise Dower, a junior at Brockton High.
Entertainment during the night, included Brockton Symphony Orchestra, DJ Rob Peters and Brockton High’s Jazz Band, whose members feasted after their set was completed, including juniors Alex Hatzinikolau and Colin Keane, (Pictured above) who stopped by Stoughton’s A Perfect Taste for a cupcakes and brownies.
Following the high school jazz band was the U.S. Navy Show Band Northeast out of Newport R.I. treated the crowd to a mix of popular songs by Taylor Swift and Lady Gaga, and classic rock selections from the Eagles and Lynyrd Skynyrd.
While many of the vendors said it was difficult for them to leave their own tables to try other businesses’ food, Bill Simms, of Bridgewater's Cake In a Box, who with his wife Janine, enjoyed the offerings of those in their vicinity, including Stoneforge Restaurant, who served up a meat lover's delight.

BROCKTON--MTV's hit show "I Used to be Fat" reality show is heading into its second season and will be casting for talent in the Boston area--possibly Brockton.
Michael Cimino, casting director for 3Ball Productions, the company that produces the show for MTV, said casting crews will be in Boston beginning in April.
He said he is trying to find a location in Brockton to hold a casting event, however those plans are still in the works.
Cimino said casting crews are expected in Boston during the first week of April. Casting calls have also gone out to Dallas, Chicago and Los Angeles.

BROCKTON--Brockton native Kenneth Feinberg, appointed by President Barack Obama to oversee a $20 billion claims fund against BP Oil following the horrific oil facility explosion last August, will be the keynote speaker at the South Coastal Counties Legal Services & New Center for Legal Advocacy's "Welcome Spring" cocktail reception, Thursday, March 24.

BROCKTON--The MetroSouth Chamber of Commerce will host the 19th annual "Taste of Metro South" Wednesday, March 23 from 5:30 to 8 p.m. at the Shaw's Center.

Withey Remembered At Benefit Concert

BROCKTON—If Brockton's Frank Withey were with his friends Saturday night at the Shaw’s Center, those friends believe he would have been impressed at the level of talent, delighted with the turnout and rocking to the jams of a group of high school students who closed the show with a 10-plus piece jazz blowout.
“He would have loved it,” said Bill Sciore, who was one of about 300 people who attended the Frank Withey Scholarship Concert held Saturday night at the Shaw’s Center.
The center was turned into a 6-hour musical extravaganza featuring dual stages and a nearly constant lineup of bands filling the Shaw’s Center with foot-stomping blues, note-chasing jazz and soulful acoustic numbers.
Sciore, 55, who went to Brockton High School with Withey—a renowned musician and teacher—said when Withey was alive he brought people together and now nearly 5 years after his death, Withey is still packing the house.
“He seemed to be the catalyst for all of us to come together,” Sciore said. “He’s doing it even more now then when he was alive,” he said.
Withey, an associate professor at Berklee College of Music, died in 2006 of an overdose.
Initially, in 2006 friends thought they would attend a show at Scullers in Cambridge when Withey was expected to feature a new band he had put together. Instead, friends were dismayed to learn Withey had unexpectedly died and the concert turned into a memoriam night at Scullers.
The Withey Scholarship concerts were born and have been held at the Canoe Club in West Bridgewater and having grown to 16 bands--have since moved to the Shaw’s Center.
Linda Lovett, who manned the raffle table with her husband Tom, said she went to high school with Withey—someone who was one of those people who got along with everyone and everyone loved.
“He was a great guy—and a great musician,” she said.
Stanley Caperneros, one of the newly formed nonprofit foundation’s advisory board members, said he and other organizers thanked everyone who helped out, from the musicians who donated their time and talents to the event, to the lighting and sound people, to the hundreds who attended.
Capernaros said he particularly wanted to thank the high school students who began the show and ended the show.
“We wanted to highlight the kids,” Capernaros said. “Frank loved being around the kids,” he said.

Water Sampler Training Saturday

BROCKTON--The Taunton River Watershed Alliance is looking for volunteers to help take water quality samples and will hold a training session Saturday, Feb. 26 at 10 a.m. at the River Center located at the Gertrude M. Boyden Refuge in Taunton.
"Volunteer monitoring can be a great family activity, a good excuse to get out on the water, or simply a good way to learn about, and protect your favorite waterbody," said Executive Director Carolynn LaMarre in an email.
Qualifications are simple: No science background is needed; the ability to walk along river banks or side walks; enjoyment of the outdoors; and a concern for the community and its environment.
LaMarre said the alliance's volunteers come from diverse educational backgrounds and experiences, with some holding advanced degrees in science, and others who are still in high school.
No previous education or training is required except transportation to get to the sampling site and a desire to help out and get a little wet.
TRWA provides all the training, equipment and the lab work.
Hardy volunteers go out once a month to take samples at 2 or 3 locations each. The association then has the samples analyzed at a laboratory.
Most of the rivers and streams that must be monitored are quite shallow, and monitored from shoreside.
Monitoring takes place first thing in the morning once a month on the second Tuesday of the month.
Samples will be collected between 6 and 9 a.m. and must immediately be brought to a nearby location for analysis that can not be done in the field.
LaMarre said this spring's sampling is an important one because of the numerous snow storms, plowing, road treatment and runoff that may have impacted local streams.
Volunteers taking water samples will show if storm water drainage such as fuel, pesticides, sewage, road salt, and garbage have fouled the area's waters or have damaged fish habitat.

Concert Remembers Brockton Musician

BROCKTON--Friends and Family of Frank Withey will host the annual scholarship fund concert in the Brockton musician's honor Saturday, Feb. 26 at the Shaw's Center beginning at 7 p.m.
Withey, a well-known musician in the area and a composition professor at Berklee College of Music, died in 2006 at age 51.
Saturday's concert will feature many of his former students and friends.

Coat Drives Bring Warmth To Needy

BROCKTON--Crescent Credit Union along with Anton’s Cleaners and Dermody’s Cleaners to collect and clean 626 winter coats collected in braches and stores in Brockton and Norwell--all of which were delivered to non-profit community organizations.
"The success of the coat drive is a testament to the compassion of our community, said Crescent Credit Union President Robert Gustafson in a prepared statement.
“We were able to surpass last year’s collection total due to the tremendous generosity of our friends, neighbors, members and employees," he said.
The 626 coats collected this year exceeds the 559 coats collected in 2009, the inaugural year of Crescent Credit Union’s annual winter coat drive.
In Brockton and Norwell, Crescent branches collected coat donations in partnership with Anton's Cleaners, who cleaned the coats at no charge and distributed them via BU Medical Center's Outreach Van, Catholic Charities, Community Giving Tree, Cradles to Crayons, Massachusetts Coalition for the Homeless, MASSCAP, The Salvation Army, and many more.
In Taunton, Crescent branches collected coat donations in partnership with Dermody's Cleaners, who cleaned the coats free of charge and delivered them to the St. Vincent de Paul Society Center for distribution to the needy.
The coat drive began in mid-October and wrapped up Saturday, January 8. An announcement of the success of the coat drive was released earlier this month.

Bio info for Josephine and George Ruffin:
Josephine St. Pierre Ruffin was born in Boston in 1842 and devoted her life to the rights of African-American women. She assisted in the formation of the American Woman Suffrage Association in 1869. While committed to the rights of all women, Mrs. Ruffin worked zealously to address the double jeopardy of racism and sexism experienced by women of color.
She organized the National Federation of Afro-American Women, convening the first national conference in Boston, and assisted with the establishment of the NAACP in 1910. Mrs. Ruffin, a member of The New England Women’s Press Association, became the first African-American woman to publish a newspaper, The Woman’s Era, which focused on the rights and achievements of black women. The League of Women for Community Service, a Boston group she helped co-found in 1918, is still active today assisting families in need in larger black communities.
George Lewis Ruffin: First African American to Graduate Harvard Law School; First African American to serve as a judge in Boston.
George Lewis Ruffin was born in Richmond, Virginia in 1836. He moved with his family to Boston in 1853 to protest Virginia’s ban on African Americans learning to read. After finishing school, Mr. Ruffin worked in a barbershop while he studied law. He graduated from Harvard Law School with the distinction of being the first black graduate of a law school in the United States. He was one of the first African Americans to be admitted to the Massachusetts bar, and he became the first African-American judge in Massachusetts. Mr. Ruffin was elected to the House of Representatives and served on the Common Council.
In addition to his successful legal career, Mr. Ruffin and his wife, Josephine St. Pierre Ruffin, were active in the fight against slavery and the struggle for justice. In celebration of his work and life, the Justice George Lewis Ruffin Society was founded in 1984, and supports minority professionals in the Massachusetts criminal justice system.
Charles J. Ogletree is Jesse Climenko Professor at Harvard Law School, the founder of the school's Charles Hamilton Houston Institute for Race and Justice, and remains a supporter and mentor to President Barack Obama and Michelle Obama since both the President and First Lady attended Ogletree's classes at Harvard.

Trio Of Bandits Hosts 2nd Charity Clothing Swap

BROCKTON--Sunday, Jan. 30 Brockton area fashionistas will head to Tamboo Bistro for the second "Cosmos & Couture" high-end, lightly-used clothing swap.
The event has been organized by the so-called "Trio of Bandits," three women who work and live in the Brockton area, Raena Camacho, Shayna Barnes and Anne Marie Belrose.
"A Trio of Bandits is thrilled to be hosting its second Cosmos & Couture event, 'New Year, New You,'" said Anne Marie Belrose. “It's a great opportunity to shake off the winter blues, get dressed up, have a great time with your friends, and recharge your wardrobe," she added.
This season's event takes place Sunday, Jan. 30 at Tamboo Restaurant, 252 Main St., from 5 to 9 p.m.
The price of admission is at least one article of clothing that can be swapped. Attendees will also receive a ticket for one free Cosmopolitan mixed drink and chances at gift certificates and other prizes.
Participants--who will have a red carpet to walk on only it will be inside unlike the first event in July when it was outside--are asked to bring high end, lightly used items of clothing, whether they be dresses, pants, suits, belts, shoes, socks or jewelry, that would be suitable for women and men to wear in job interviews or work.
Donations from Sunday's event will be made to Penelope's Place, a women's shelter that provides services to survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault.
“It’s important to feel and look good during a job interview. We want to give these women the tools they need to feel fabulous and at the same time make life easier, so that they can make decisions, and begin to take control of their lives,” said co-organizer Raena Camacho.
All are invited and should arrive with clothing to swap and a party attitude.

Third Annual Event Set For Thursday

BROCKTON -- The Caring Adults Committee of Brockton’s Promise will host the city’s third annual Mentor Recruit Rally Thursday, Jan. 27th.
This free event will take place from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Shaw’s Center, 1 Feinburg Way.
Attendees at the event will be able to learn about mentoring opportunities available in the city, at no cost.
Pre-registration is recommended.
The event will feature keynote speaker Ron Burton, Jr., director of Community Relations for the Boston Red Sox, and director of the Ron Burton Training Village. There will also be a performance by the Brockton High School Jazz Band, and the announcement of the Promise in Action Award for Exceptional Mentoring.
